Macy’s at Night

Posted on 3 April 202531 March 2025
Macy’s in the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx, 2025 January 2. New York City, USA.

Nighttime photography has a special look to it. In one sense, a lot of extraneous detail is left out because of focused patches of light. It can give the scene a feeling of mystery and can have us asking what is just outside of each patch of light.

Night photography is also challenging because of the lack of light. It means bumping up my camera’s ISO, which can introduce digital noise into the image. My current camera (a canon EOS 5D Mark IV) is much better at low-light photography than any of my previous cameras, which is nice. It gives me more leeway to bump up the ISO and still capture the details I desire without worrying as much about noise.
