Those of us participating in the BGWAC exhibit this Saturday (two more days!!!!) were instructed to make sure our frames were wired for hanging. My frames came with alligator hangers. If I’d had the time I would have gone back to the frame shoppe to see if they could install wires for me. Instead I asked my tribe, and they assured me it was an easy enough job to do myself with supplies from my local hardware store. I ran across the street this afternoon (in the monsoon that decided to start just as I was leaving the building), picked up what I needed, and came back to try my hand at wiring my own frames. With a little guidance from DuckDuckGo it was easier than I thought!
Supplies
- Hanging wire
- Wire Eyelets
- Measuring Tape
- Marking Pencil
- Screwdriver
- Wire Cutters
- Smartphone (to make photos)

Step 1. Lay the frame flat on its face and mark the top of the frame so I won’t go through all of this for nothing.
Step 2. Measure the sides and mark each side about 1/4 from the top.

Step 3. Screw the wire eyelets into the frame at the markings.

Step 4. Thread 5″ of wire through one eyelet.

Step 5. Fold and wrap the wire around itself.

Step 6. Stretch the wire across the frame to the other eyelet, leaving enough slack that you can pull it up about halfway to the top of the frame.
Step 7. Fold the wire at the eyelet and cut the wire, leaving a 5″ tail. Wrap the wire around itself the same way you did on the other side.
Step 8. Post your success on the internet!

That last step isn’t necessary, but you know me: I had to share.
My frames are all wired. My bags are packed. I leave in the morning. Washington, DC here I come!
