When I hear people complain about how many people are “staring into their phones instead of interacting with the world” I think about all of the times I have educated and been educated via my smartphone. This person is just as likely to be watching a movie full of mindless entertainment as they are to be watching an educational documentary, reading a textbook, editing their Ph.D. dissertation, or reading a letter from someone they care about. All of my life I have seen people do this while on the go in the New York City metro area (except for watch documentaries and movies, of course), except they were carrying books or papers instead of smartphones or tablets.
People haven’t changed: technology has. I embrace it.
