The Beautiful Bronx

Posted on 8 March 20216 March 2021
West Farms Square, 3 December 2020. Bronx (New York), USA.

Stereotypical images of beauty do not include places like my neighborhood, even if they include images of urban areas. That is a failure on the part of the media. It is long past time our ideas of beauty expanded beyond what the Eurocentric mainstream media promotes. That includes human beauty. Life is much broader and more beautiful overall than they would have you believe.

What is beautiful about this photo? The people wearing masks and practicing social distancing to protect themselves and others is beautiful. The juxtaposition of a new building on the left with the much older elevated train station in front of it is beautiful. The presence of trains and buses providing public transportation alternatives is beautiful to anyone who knows what it is like to live in an area without reliable public transport. It all depends on the viewer’s perspective.
