The Cross Bronx Expressway was the first highway built through a heavily populated city in the United States. Robert Moses and his crew built the highway from 1948 until 1972. Moses was a polarizing figure with many critics, who say his projects displaced or shut out the poor and African Americans. The Cross Bronx Expressway cuts through a number of low-income neighborhoods and, according to Moses’ critics, negatively affected them.
