I am rethinking my use of social media for my photography and am shifting my focus to Patreon for the time being. I’ll still post here, just not as frequently. The people who are invested in my work are mostly on Patreon. It makes sense that most of my time and energy on social media be spent there.
Other women of color have written about how too often we give our work away for free instead of making sure we are paid for our time and talent. That is striking a chord with me and making me think more seriously about what my work is worth, both in artistic and monetary value. I could continue to pour a lot of my effort into posting here in the hopes someone will discover my work, or I could pour that effort into the places where people have already discovered and are investing in me, whether online or in person. The more I think about it, the more the latter makes sense.
Views and comments are great for my ego, and I appreciate everyone who makes the time to connect with me here. But if views and comments do not translate into investment in me as an artist, I am giving myself away for free for little more than a pat on the back.. That doesn’t make sense. In fact, I am undervaluing myself by continuing to do so. I am not inspired to create my best work that way.
