Nighttime Photography

Posted on 17 June 20193 June 2019
15 April 2019. Bronx (New York), USA.

Spontaneous nighttime photography has challenges spontaneous daytime photography does not. The spontaneity means I am hand-holding my camera instead of using a tripod, so I almost always have to shoot with a wide-open aperture and higher ISO than usual. My DSLR’s images begin to get noticeably noisy at ISO 2000. (In contrast, my newer smartphone’s camera is noticeably noisy anywhere over ISO 200.) That means making a trade-off between shutter speed, depth of field, and the noise level of the image. I remember this night was breezy, so that added a layer of complexity in capturing this image. Nevertheless, I’m pleased with the result.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II. ISO 2000. 1/30 sec. F/1.8.
